Hi, I’m Emily Ivey, and I am a photographer based out of southern California. I’m married to the love of my life, Jason, and we are parents to two rascally Jack Russell terriers, Biggs and Hazel.

I grew up in the Bay Area (in this state that means “that area around San Francisco”). I was the youngest of five children, and while my older siblings studied things like engineering and became programmers of the mighty Silicon Valley, I was the “artiste” from the beginning. I drew before I could write, and sang before I could talk.

My father passed away shortly after I was born, but my mother told me in many ways I was my father’s daughter. He too was musical and artistic. I like that I have that part of him with me.

My first camera was a Minolta. I don’t even remember the model. I took some photography classes in high school and only ever had enough money to buy 20 exposures at a time. I don’t recall taking any pictures that were technically good, but I did remember how much I loved the way the camera would connect me in a special way with my subjects. It can make people vulnerable, or it can make people ham it up. If you catch them unawares, there’s a chance you can capture something of their true self. Either way, portrait photography can be powerful stuff.

I studied design in college and became a graphic designer before eventually picking up the camera again, and the romance with photography was renewed. I soon started Fresh Ivey Photography as a way to service the fine people that surround me with one of the best gifts I can give them: a way to capture their life and their loves with quality photography and lots of TLC.
