Identical twins Amy and Allison turned the BIG and SWEET 16 recently. We hit downtown Santa Ana as a nice diversion from Irvine and had fun taking these casual pics…

Later on in the day, Allison had to take off to gym practice. Amy recently sustained an injury that has taken her off the hook for training for a while. ;-) So she and I –along with little sister Anna–took off into the meadows to catch some gorgeous sunset light.

When I had to think of a concept for a senior photo shoot for Ashley Sun of University High in Irvine, California, I asked myself, “Where to begin?” Ashley is one of the most well-rounded and talented kids I know: she’s a cheerleader, straight A student, into martial arts, has taken violin lessons since she was a tot, and was homecoming queen this year at her high school (Go, Ashley!).

My inspiration for Ashley drew from her skills as a violinist, however. Ashley has played in Orange County’s Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra the last several years, and there’s something simply beautiful about people with their instruments. I wanted to feature her playing against the local backdrop of Laguna Beach with the cliffs and waves at sunset. She obliged, donned on her stunning gown from homecoming, and here are the faves…

Special thanks to Jessica Hunter Artistry for her make-up work!

Two AMAZING teen gymnast TWINS + custom-made colorful tutus = FASHION SHOOT!

I just love how things come together sometimes. I’ve wanted to do a photo shoot for some time now with Amy and Allison, the kids of long time family friends. I’ve seen those kids grow up and I absolutely LOVE THEM. They’re the kind of kids that make you believe there’s hope for the future: polite, positive, hard-working, humorous, imaginative, and fun. The twins are also level 10 gymnasts and their dedication to this intense and demanding sport throughout the years have always inspired me.

Anyhow…I was wondering what would add a little flair to their shoot when I saw my old design school buddy’s posting on Facebook about his sisters’ online tutu store, Sassy Ruffles Boutique (visit http://tinyurl.com/ygu65m5 to see more details!) and I thought, “Aha!” OK, so I know gymnasts don’t wear tutus, but hey…why not? ;-) We’ll save the competition leotards for another day.

We made the connection with Katy Baker and Amanda Walsvic of Sassy Ruffles Boutique and the result was an impromptu shoot in beautiful meadows, complete with my favorite photographer friend Matthew Saville. Yes, there are meadows in Orange County, and I won’t tell you where. :) Add a dab of vintage processing and voila!
